In the series of depicting the port of Bacino de San Marco by the artist this is another fine depiction of the historically important place. The scene includes the monumental buildings like the Clock Tower of the St. Mark’s Square on the right side being the highest structure in the landscape. Right before it, the building is called Doge’s palace which was built by the Doge of Venice, the ultimate authority of the Venetian government. It became the central building of the government after the governance was moved in the palace. The building on the left side of Doge’s Palace is called Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana meaning National Library of St Mark’s in English. It is a building from the renaissance period. Throughout the many years, […]

Another version of the same dock in Italy artist seams fascinated with the view of the Bacino de San Marco about which he has made around 5 more versions of the same landscape. The keen history and the novice of the surroundings may have intrigued him to portray the scene. Here, we are watching a more clear and detailed version of the port, with buildings having more detail and the Quai des Esclavons (the pavement near the creek) is having more objects than the other portrayals. The prominent buildings on the right are The Doge’s Palace, The clock Tower & The Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana. The big square emerges between those buildings is called St Mark’s Square. All of them have their own significant histories in the […]

Iconic landscape of Venice, at the evening time, has been depicted by Felix Ziem the French artist. It is among his around 5 versions of the quai des Esclavons, means Dock of Esclvaons. This dock has been used for centuries for overseas trades. Other than the trading ships (which are slightly seen on the far left) the painting mainly depicts the Venice’s iconic boats, the Gondolas, leaving the dockyard. It is depicted middle with darker colors. Those are the main links to sail around the city as the City of Water has canals instead of streets. Gondolas can’t much further in the ocean due to its small size and limited amount of goods it can carry. The title in French language also gives importance to […]

Subtle description of the city of Venice concentrating mainly on the Grand Canal the painting silently adheres the grandeur of the city. Felix Ziem’s series about his favorite city discovers various dimensions and places of the city in artistic way. The glory of Venice is wide-spread in the world. Just like Vatican City, Venice also comprises historically noteworthy building. But unlike Vatican’s religious impression on the visitor’s mind, Venice enjoys nickname of a romantic city. Many visitors on their romantic journey visit Venice and take a ride on the Gondolas – the small iconic boats of the city which travels through-out the canals. The boats in the painting are the same Gondolas without which Venice’s depiction would be considered incomplete. A routine of placing elements […]

Felix Ziam takes a new angel in depicting Venice’s noticeable place of Bacino de San Marco, an important port from where Venice’s most overseas business was handled. In Venice, it’s like every building is historical and each them has its own intriguing history to know about. Here, the building on the left is called Punta Della Dogana (point of customs). As the name suggests, the building was used for managing the affairs of overseas business. It looked after the ships bringing and carrying away the goods from the city. Thus, it was the epicenter of the oversea business for the city which was a main point to increase the city’s wealth in many ways. On the right, in the far background, the visible buildings are […]

The beautiful landscape seems to be a depiction of a lovely afternoon at the banks of Bosphorus. Felix’s take on portraying landscapes with cultural importance of the place again strikes here with people gathered under a tree and the glimpse of the historically known city of Istanbul in the backdrop. Maybe Felix had a tendency to depict the places with some meaning or the importance inherited within them. Because, his choice of places and furthermore, the choice of vintage point from where he depicts the place always includes the major elements of the place, all of which has their own allegories and major part in the story of the place. In current the presented depiction, it just feels just a beautiful painting of an afternoon. […]

Felix Ziem’s beloved city, Venice comes again in his work, in which he developed his artistic skill and kept visiting annually for many years. As if the beauty of the city had some kind of magic spread on his mind. In his series depicting Venice in many different angels and searching out the beautiful landscapes, in this particular painting, the view is a little bit afar from the main city. The Gondola (small intercity boats of Venice to travel small distances) is travelling in the outskirt of the city after which the large sea of Adriatic is spread to horizon. But the buffer zone between the city and the sea is called the Lagoon, which is safe to sail in. A family has ride upon […]

The beautiful and significant landscape of the Venice’ waterfront called Riva degli Schiavoni in English is very crowded place in modern times or should I say over-crowded. People love to take a walk on the pavement near the river for a fresh air. But the history of this place is large due to the prominent building resting beside the bank of the river. The nearest building in the painting on the right built with a Venetian gothic style is called Doge’s palace. Many people may walk by it today without knowing the historical importance of the building. It was the building from where the Venetian republic was governed. It was built by Doge Angelo Partecipazio as he found the need of moving the government from […]
