Ford Madox Brown is a painter from 19th century mainly depicting the historical subjects. In current painting called Romeo and Juliet, he has tried his hand upon the world-known play by Shakespeare – Romeo and Juliet. It is the balcony scene where Romeo and Juliet express their love for the first time to each other, the scene where Juliet first time utters the words “What’s in a name?”

Mostly every part of the play has become a legendary scene as it has been repeated for numerous times in school plays, movies and theaters. You can’t even count the number it has been enacted and illustrated.

In the play, when Romeo is hiding under balcony in shadows Juliet comes on the balcony and speaks out her feelings for Romeo, taking her loneliness for granted. But, she didn’t know that Romeo was listening to her every word and was waiting for the right time to show up. On the right moment, he reveals himself and expresses his love. They both confront each other and accept each other as lovers. Juliet suggests to get married. Romeo agrees without a second thought and lives the premise.

The picture presents the moment when both of them were parting from each other in the Act 3. Romeo has reached to Juliet for a gentle kiss.

In the play, love almost appears as a character controlling both leading characters’ minds and that’s also reflected in the painting as Juliet has a firm grip around Romeo and Romeo is reaching out for Juliet’s soft touch.

The ultimate and most revered icons for lovers have been depicted many times, but the current depiction represents the more sensual and intimate aspect of their love when they were ready to do anything for each other.
