The Boer war was first of the two wars fought between the English empire and the Boers (farmers) of the African region Transvaal. The farmers were fed up by the ruling of the English men and decided to rebel against the vast empire which once ruled all over the world with its cruel mind-games. Artist has depicted here the scene of an English rider with a juvenile threatening an unarmed farmer. Both figures are portrayed with impactful pose. The soldier is about to penetrate the farmer’s head while the farmer is raising his arm trying to save himself as there is no way to run while the attacker is on a horse. In the backdrop, one more Boer is surrounded by the enemies and already […]

Captain James Cook. We have heard this name for umpteen times in history periods, books and in historical references. He was the first circumnavigator of New Zealand, gave detailed maps of Newfoundland and the very first voyager to reach Australia and Hawaiian Islands.  We know him as the great explorer of 18th century who ultimately sacrificed his life during such expedition. Johann Zoffany has painted Cook’s very last moments in this painting. This is an unfinished painting. As we can see that the scenery in background is very plain-looking and the people on the right-hand rock are just shadowy figures without much details inserted. Though, the foreground seems completed with sufficient details. We can see Captain Cook in the foreground lying on the ground surrounded […]

Pieta, as a subject, relays the message of a sorrowful yet pride mother who has lost her son for the sake of humanity and other benevolent causes. The subject mainly became known after the sculpture Pieta by Michelangelo. His Pieta presented Mother Mary carrying lean, weak and dead Jesus in her lap and mourning over his death. Though, the artist intended to represent the delicate scene where Mother Mary is mourning but at the same time can’t regret her son’s death due to the great cause for which he did the ultimate sacrifice. Pieta represents a mother’s dilemma who can’t decide if she should cry for her son’s death or take pride out of it. And this difficult situation, where a mother is forced to […]

This historical painting represents the death of British General Wolfe who fought in the Seven Years War and after his death, became the lead hero of the war. His novice military training techniques and fighting tactics helped big at conquering Quebec from the French and ultimately winning over the whole Canada. This 1770 painting, before America became independent, though portrays the fall of a soldier but indirectly represents the triumph in the war. There are two indicators included in the painting for that. Above Wolfe’s body is the flag which still is standing. Other indicator is the minor figure on the far left. A soldier is running towards the scene raising one hand and holding the flag in another. He is carrying the message of […]

The first version of  Massacre of the Innocents by Rubens was made in 1612. Here is represented the second version made in 1638, which resembles some similarities to the original while brutalizes some aspects even more than the first one. The subject matter and the scene is elaborately described in the first version’s iconography. The second version is painted after 25 years of the first one and it hasn’t lost its impact. Actually, Rubens has made it more intense and gruesome than the first one. More realistic approach than the first version In here, the emphasis is on the use of weaponry to kill infant. In the first version, soldiers were depicted in a moment in which they were killing either snatching the infants from […]
