This elegant portrayal of vase full of flowers, fruits at the bottom and some insects buzzing around the setting is achieved by a Dutch still-life painter Jan Van Huysum, whose ability was derived from his painter father Justus van Huysum and grandfather Jan van Huysum I.

Here in this oil-on-canvas painting from 18th century, the appearance of the flower almost seems as they are floating freely in the mid-air due to the dark background and very shy presentation of the table. The thin lines and low light makes the table visible.

The richness of the color by variety of flowers adds more natural angle than an artistic portrayal. The reason to add two butterflies and a snail could be to show that the flowers and fruits are not artificial. Or it is just an artistic addition to fill the vacant places.

Still-life paintings sometimes remind me about the aesthetics we miss in little things in the routine life. Actually, most of us have almost forgotten to appreciate the beauty of nature in little things.
