Painting Hierarchy or the Hierarchy of Genres are the six main types of painting:

1. History Painting
2. Portrait Painting
3. Genre Painting
4. Landscape Painting
5. Animal Painting
6. Still Life Painting

Most of the paintings falls in one or more of these categories and are defined, interpreted accordingly.

Kerstiaen de Keuninck was a Baroque painter in late 16th and early 17th century. He was known for his works on beautiful landscapes. This oil-on-panel painting shows some animals drinking from a stream and eating grass from the land. The herdsman could be seen in the far background under the shadows of the trees. The massive trees are a prominent part of the portrait showing the scene is from a grove. In the scene, we can see all the elements of Mother Nature as they were, before mankind ‘progressed’ and cut off those beautiful trees.
