The beautiful landscape seems to be a depiction of a lovely afternoon at the banks of Bosphorus. Felix’s take on portraying landscapes with cultural importance of the place again strikes here with people gathered under a tree and the glimpse of the historically known city of Istanbul in the backdrop. Maybe Felix had a tendency to depict the places with some meaning or the importance inherited within them. Because, his choice of places and furthermore, the choice of vintage point from where he depicts the place always includes the major elements of the place, all of which has their own allegories and major part in the story of the place. Felix Ziem’s beloved city, Venice comes again in his work, in which he developed his artistic skill and kept visiting annually for many years. As if the beauty of the city had some kind of magic spread on his mind. In his series depicting Venice in many different angels and searching out the beautiful landscapes, in this particular painting, the view is a little bit afar from the main city. The Gondola (small intercity boats of Venice to travel small distances) is travelling in the outskirt of the city after which the large sea of Adriatic is spread to horizon. The Austrian painter Hans Zatzka is known for painting women in rich environment. His themes varied from mythology to fantasy and sometimes real places. But, his most prolific works represents mythological characters in different sets. The current painting is about the Greek goddess Venus in lying on a ground surrounded by the ‘attendants’.
