In the series of depicting the port of Bacino de San Marco by the artist this is another fine depiction of the historically important place. The scene includes the monumental buildings like the Clock Tower of the St. Mark’s Square on the right side being the highest structure in the landscape. Right before it, the building is called Doge’s palace which was built by the Doge of Venice, the ultimate authority of the Venetian government. It became the central building of the government after the governance was moved in the palace. Completed in 1824, The Sea of Ice or sometimes referred as The Wreck of Hope is a piece by the German painter Casper David Friedrich. It represents the accident of a ship which is drowning under the ice while the broken ice sheet by the accident has arisen upwards significantly. The top and bottom of the painting also resembles the popular color use of blue vs. orange, abundantly apparent in modern day art, films, posters and paintings. A funny experience the artist, Ilya Repin, had was that people were afraid of giving a pose for the painting as there was a belief among illiterate haulers that once a person’s image is put down on a paper, his soul leaves his possession. Finding no model (even after offering a fee) for his painting, he created all of his unique characters during his journey through Russia.
