The scene depicts the 2000 years old monumental building Pantheon, the Fontanta del Pantheon (Fountain of the Pantheon) and the Piazza della Rotonda, the square in front of the Pantheon. The square got its name from the informal name of the Pantheon called as Santa Maria Rotonda.

The whole place is heavily influenced by the pantheon, which has been used as a place for different needs throughout its around 2000 year old lifetime.  It was built as a sacred place for god – a Roman temple, then in renaissance it became a tomb for the big names like Raphael and Annibale Carricci. From that time it has been used as a tomb and as well as a church. Most of its decoration has remained the same but there are some changes.

Pantheon was built in 126 AD and is the third building at the same place. First two buildings were burned down for various reasons. A building this old is still the largest building in the world which has the unreinforced concrete dome. That’s a huge achievement for the Romans.

Apart from its historical importance, the building standing itself is very big that researchers have estimated that a circle of 43.3 m diameter could perfectly fit under the dome. The realization that this is the same building in which Romans from 126 AD walked and 1500 years later the renaissance’s one of the greatest artist in history roamed in it also got buried there with her fiancee is a fascinating thought. And today, we are able to enter in the same building in which some of the great artist sat. This giant monument has gathered up many stories and incidents under its dome.

In the painting, the square called Piazza della Rotonda, is filled with the contemporary people when the painting was painted. It is been used as a market ground and people are buying and selling goods on everyday bases. The pantheon of Rome has become a normal building for them just like the other buildings around, but the hue, greatness and importance of the place would be easily be gone if it was not for the Pantheon.
