Being one of the most important biblical events, “the birth of the virgin”, or the birth of Mary, is a source of inspiration for many artists in history and contemporary times. Uccelo’s fascination with the Christian stories, and those, which marked his times, often resonate with each other in his Italian old-town frescoes. Here, the birth of the virgin is momentous, in which the kin folk and everyone else around are all up and about to make things easier, better and happier. One of Paolo Uccelo’s works in fresco is perhaps the biggest St. Stephen moment, and probably the most inspiring biblical story by the medieval painter. An Italian masterpiece with historical significance is always an attraction for someone interested in European art. The martyrdom of St. Stephen is an inspiring event, which can be seen in contemporary sense as someone sacrificing himself to protect free speech rights under a dictatorship. However, Noah could have also lived during the next great flood, which primarily affected northern Africa, ancient […]

American painter John Quidor has depicted a famous scene from the short story collection The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving. The story is about a girl who is sought by two men. The ill-hearted person doesn’t get the girl at the end and on the return to his hometown, he gets persuaded by a ghost of a headless horseman in the haunted jungle on the road. This historical painting represents the death of British General Wolfe who fought in the Seven Years War and after his death, became the lead hero of the war. His novice military training techniques and fighting tactics helped big at conquering Quebec from the French and ultimately winning over the whole Canada. This 1770 painting, before America became independent, though portrays the fall of a soldier but indirectly represents the triumph in the war. There are two indicators included in the painting for that. Above Wolfe’s body is the flag which still is standing. Other indicator is the minor figure on the far left. A soldier is running towards the scene raising one hand and holding the flag in another. He is carrying the message of […]
