Valentine Zubiaurre was a Spanish painter in late 19th century. He was born deaf just like his brother unfortunately. The irony of their lives is that both were sons of a composer. In his early age, he began painting. He traveled foreign countries to nurture his skills. After acquiring enough experience and doing some outstanding works, he got the first medal of national exhibition of fine arts in 1917. This genre painting named ‘Boys Fishing’ was drawn in 1902. It is an oil-on-canvas painting. It shows a boy fishing in lake with another boy with same outfit standing right behind him. The woman in back is probably their mother with daughter standing beside. Anders Zorn was a well-known personality in late 19th and early 20th century. He was an adroit painter portraying the wide-range of portraits, landscapes and genre-paintings. The 10th day of Muharram or the Ashura Day is remembered as the day on which Hussein Ibn Ali was martyred in the battle of Karbala. The famous Spanish painter Franscisco de Zurbaran has drawn some greatest pictures in the history. In his oeuvre, the meditating saint Francis is a major subject. He has drawn various portrait of this saintly personality. A quick glance at the current representation of Saint Francis raises a question in my mind. Why a skull is included in there? And as I thought about the question further, I had some speculations. St Francis kneeling on ground with a skull in his hand, illustrates the deep and cryptic meanings of life and death. Maybe hinting the fact that death and life is contemporary to each other. Artist tried to portray the fact by making St. Francis the representative of life and the skull, of death. Those both […]
