Around 19th century, people of Istanbul used to have scribes to write or read their letters as they had very low literary knowledge. This oil-on-canvas painting shows one of those days. Artist Fausto Zonaro was born in Masi, which was in Austrian Empire, in 1854. He was very much interested in painting from the beginning and his parents decided to encourage his skill. After learning in a Fine arts Academy in Verona, he opened his own art school in Venice. But he was not fully happy with his way of life. He found the satisfaction in Istanbul. Genre scenes like this generally doesn’t consist any striking elements which can capture one’s eyes immediately. Like in the fantasy or dramatic scenes contains some elements which can spectacularly impress the viewer’s mind. Such as Massacre of the Innocents by Peter Paul Rubens in which the cruel scene grips our mind and forces to find out more about the scene represented. Genre paintings tend to be more sober and without frills of high-imaginations. Here, the western genre painting accomplished by Swedish artist Kilian Zoll, also gives a cool effect and explores the contemporary village’s customs. A child with his chimney-sweeping tools on his shoulders, the regular black clothing of a sweep, a bowl of meal and a little grin of having a break for meal after the tiresome work-hours represents a perfect, happy and satisfied embodiment of a child-sweep from the 19th century by the artist in this genre painting. But, the current painting is not even near to the actual situations of the real child sweep in old times.
