Iconic landscape of Venice, at the evening time, has been depicted by Felix Ziem the French artist. It is among his around 5 versions of the quai des Esclavons, means Dock of Esclvaons. This dock has been used for centuries for overseas trades. Other than the trading ships (which are slightly seen on the far left) the painting mainly depicts the Venice’s iconic boats, the Gondolas, leaving the dockyard. It is depicted middle with darker colors. Those are the main links to sail around the city as the City of Water has canals instead of streets. Gondolas can’t much further in the ocean due to its small size and limited amount of goods it can carry. The title in French language also gives importance to […]

Felix Ziam takes a new angel in depicting Venice’s noticeable place of Bacino de San Marco, an important port from where Venice’s most overseas business was handled. In Venice, it’s like every building is historical and each them has its own intriguing history to know about. Here, the building on the left is called Punta Della Dogana (point of customs). As the name suggests, the building was used for managing the affairs of overseas business. It looked after the ships bringing and carrying away the goods from the city. Thus, it was the epicenter of the oversea business for the city which was a main point to increase the city’s wealth in many ways. On the right, in the far background, the visible buildings are […]

Felix Ziem’s beloved city, Venice comes again in his work, in which he developed his artistic skill and kept visiting annually for many years. As if the beauty of the city had some kind of magic spread on his mind. In his series depicting Venice in many different angels and searching out the beautiful landscapes, in this particular painting, the view is a little bit afar from the main city. The Gondola (small intercity boats of Venice to travel small distances) is travelling in the outskirt of the city after which the large sea of Adriatic is spread to horizon. But the buffer zone between the city and the sea is called the Lagoon, which is safe to sail in. A family has ride upon […]

The beautiful and significant landscape of the Venice’ waterfront called Riva degli Schiavoni in English is very crowded place in modern times or should I say over-crowded. People love to take a walk on the pavement near the river for a fresh air. But the history of this place is large due to the prominent building resting beside the bank of the river. The nearest building in the painting on the right built with a Venetian gothic style is called Doge’s palace. Many people may walk by it today without knowing the historical importance of the building. It was the building from where the Venetian republic was governed. It was built by Doge Angelo Partecipazio as he found the need of moving the government from […]

Venice is called a floating city, as everyone knows about it. Instead of having roads, waterways goes through the city and small boats called gondolas are used to travel from one place to another. For romantic people and artists, it’s just a heaven to reside in. No wonder many artists came and fall in love it. Felix Ziem for instance, was a great admirer and lover of the city, who depicted dozens of paintings of the city from different angles. The everlasting and ever-growing beauty of the city is magnificent and unique in every way and could also be called romantic to some extent. The unique nature and exclusivity of such city combines some of the fantasy-elements into the real world, which might be the […]
